I was in the last CPhI fair in Barcelona, the largest pharmaceutical fair in the world.

There I could find some mention to chewing gum in some of the booths.

For instance, the gum base supplier “CAFOSA” was presenting a tabletted chewing gum with probiotic function. The product contains Lactobacillus Patented Strains (AB-Dentalac) as active ingredient and has an oral care claim associated to it.

Extract from Cafosa’s brochure: AB-DENTALAC has bactericidal activity against most common oral pathogens and helps restore the protective oral flora by competing against pathogenic bacteria and disrupting their adhesion to the different tissues in the oral cavity.

I have been silent for a while, but now I am happy to come back with one of my favorite subjects: Functional Gum.

See what I found in a pharmacy next to my home:

Chicle saciante WUG chicle relajante WUG chicle vital WUG

3 interesting functional gums:

“Satiant gum”: Appetite suppresant gum or also labelled as “Diet gum” containing FOS (Fructooligosacharides) and CGMP (CaseinGlucoMacroPeptide). It is tabletted gum (not so many in the market!)

“Relaxing gum”: It claims that it helps sleep, promotes resting and treats occasional insomnia. Formulated with valerian, tryptophan, lemon balm and melatonin. This is also tabletted. It has the characteristic texture of this type of gum.

“Vital gum”: Also labelled as “After party”. It says to promote alertness and reduce mental tiredness. It contains Pineapple extract, Vitamin C, B6 and B12, guarana extract and lycopene. This one is coated which makes it a bit different from the others.

The company which markets the gum is WUGum. The website is www.wugum.com

According to the web, there is also a gum that helps you getting tanned, but I did not find this one in the pharmacy. It is formulated with Betacaronte, lycopene and vitamins C, D3 and E. “Bronze gum”.

It is the second time that I write about this company. It was one year ago that I discovered them in ISM and introduced them to you. Now, again in ISM, they launch a new version of their Energy gum. They have added Guarana in the formulation, so the coated gums contain now caffeine + guarana.

Bach Flower in chewing gum 27/08/2014

Some days ago I came across this interesting functional gum, which uses the well-known Bach flower remedies in chewing gum format.

It illustrates what I have been mentioning several times in this web-site, which is the importance of functional gums. The growth in this category has been a fact since a few years and all gum producers should consider this segment in a very serious way in case they are not doing it yet.

In this example, the company LemonPharma (headquartered in Germany) offers 3 different versions of chewing gum:

1- For emergencies

2- Energy

3- Concentration

4- Self-Confidence

The product is presented in plastic bottles containing 60 g (approx. 40 units) of coated pillows. They have a nice crunch and chew. They do not contain aspartame and are produced only with xylitol as sweetener.

GUM AND VITAMINS 19/06/2014

Today I want to talk about a functional gum. You know I have special interest on all these gums that provide some added benefits, so I am eager to taste and to talk about them.

Vitamingum® , from the USA, comes in two different versions:

– VITAMINGUM Fresh. This product is packed in blisters with 12 coated pillows each. It comes in three flavors (cinnamon, spearmint and peppermint) and contains 12 vitamins (!). They make up to 10% of the Recommended Daily Value (RDV) per serving. The vitamins are A, C, D, E and a range of Bs, plus folic acid and BiotinThe taste has good lasting and the chew is nice.

-VITAMINGUM Sport. This one comes in hollow balls packed in flow pack (each pack contains 4 balls) or in pouches containing 18 balls. There are three different flavors (grape, raspberry and bubble gum). The chew is surprisingly soft for a hollow ball and the cud volume is really big. It contains 25% of the RDV of the same vitamins as Vitamingum, so it is the “stronger version” of the former. In theory, by chewing only 4 of these balls per day, we can get the level of vitamins that is recommended.

Both products use Sucralose and Neotame as sweeteners and, in fact, use the claim of being “Aspartame free”.

It has been in the market for some time already, so it not really a new launching, but it is, anyway, a good example of how to make good functional products.

The product is based on a patent and sold by the company Vitaball, Inc. from Kentucky, and you can learn more in their website: www.chewvitamingum.com

Chewing gum for Eye-care! 29/05/2014

Confectionerynews.com published recently about a new type of gum developed by the Danish company FERTIN PHARMA.

It is called “Vision gum” and it contains Lutein, zinc and vitamins A, B2 and E. The gum was presented during the Vitafoods exhibition fair that took place in Geneva (Switzerland) from 6th until 8th May.

The company wants to be very careful bout the claims associated with this chewing gum, and states that it “helps maintain good vision” but in any case “cures bad vision”.

I must say that, as far as I know,  it is the first chewing gum going in the direction of “healthy vision”. There are and have been gums in the market with vitamins (Vitamin C is the most popular but there are products with A, E and others as well), but it is the first one that combines the vitamins with Lutein. So it is good to see the range of functional gums expanding.

I attach here the link to the article in case you want to read more about it.  Vision gum

Energy gum 05/04/2014

A new energy gum has been launched in UK. It is named “RAW” and marketed by Navson, a mineral water company. They position this gum at lower price (18 pieces for 0,99 Pound; 1,2 Eur; 1,65 US$) than other competitors and do not use caffein (maybe the most obvious ingredient that comes to our mind when considering this product category). “RAW” contains Taurine and Vitamin B.

Other energy gums are mentioned in the article from confectionery news.com (link):

VIBE: 10 pieces per pack. 2 Pounds (=2,42 Eur, 3,32 US$)

L.A. FUEL: 7 gums per pack, 25 mg Taurine per gum, 100 mg caffeine per gum, 3,00 Eur per pack (=2,48 Pounds, 4,11 US$)

And other gums in the market:

DRIVE GUM: 10 gums per pack, 25 mg caffeine per gum, 2,8 Eur per pack (=2,31 Pounds, 3,84 US$)

C2 Energy Gum: 40 gums per pack (plastic bottle), caffeine, taurine and guarana (precise quantities do not appear in their web site). At 8990 chilean pesos (= 11,82 Eur, 9,77 Pounds, 16,19 US$)

Encapsulation: Tastetech (UK) 10/05/2013

Tastetech is a British company specialized in “Controled Release Food Flavourings and Ingredients” (using the same words that you can find in their website www.tastetech.com).

As chewing gum technology moves to a higher complexity level worldwide, the need for encapsulated systems becomes more and more important. 20 years ago there were very few gums in the market using encapsulated systems. Today, consumers are much more demanding and, often, gums are sold as an “experience” more than just as a product, and this is a worldwide trend. Chewing gum producers must use more sophisticated formulations to meet these expectations.

When we think “encapsulation”, the first thing that comes to our mind is “flavour”. Encapsulated flavours play a critical role in one of the main aspects of the chewing gum: Long lasting (but also on the first impact!). By using encapsulated flavours, we can extend the perception of the flavour for a longer time. But then, we know that that perception is also linked to “sweetness”, and here “encapsulated intensive sweeteners” can play an important role. Tastetech is also producing those and I took this image from their web-site to illustrate this idea:

LH_1_Main_AW_CROP

By combining the right encapsulated flavours and sweeteners we can clearly improve the quality of the gum. Top brands use those elements in their formulations.

We should not forget acids, as they can also be encapsulated, and they also play a role in the taste perception. Fruit flavours cannot be complete without the right acid in the chewing gum composition (citric, malic, tartaric,…)

And finally, and very important, the encapsulation of active ingredients. As we find more and more functional chewing gums in many countries (Japan is my personal favourite for that!) it becomes more necessary to protect those ingredients (which sometimes can be sensitive to temperature, oxidation, etc…), to control the release from the gum into the mouth, sometimes to mask undesirable taste or to provide a right flowability which helps in the handling of the whole. The encapsulation of those actives will clearly improve those characteristics versus a non-encapsulated version.

Functional Gum in Mexico 08/04/2013

More news about functional gum being published by http://www.confectionery news.com

Some days ago the focus was Holland and today is on Mexico.

In these two countries, like in many others, the growth of chewing gum is expected to be higher than the growth in other confectionery fields. and the main driver for that is the potential functionality that a chewing gum can contain. Of course the health claim is a key aspect in many markets and an issue that consumers value more and more. Then, of course, becomes a major issue for producers of chewing gums (and almost any other food product, I’d say).

The article also mentions that fruit flavours are the most popular in that country and gives some figures from Euromonitor about the market shares (with mention to one of the companies that I described some days ago: PISSA)

Again, good article from Oliver Nieburg of Confectionerynews.com!

LOTTE – Korea / Japan 05/04/2013

Today’s turn for one of the big names in the chewing gum industry: LOTTE

This huge group has even an entry in Wikipedia! They have many branches in different industries (electronics, tourism, publishing, building, finance, retail, …) but chewing gum was in the origin of the company back in 1948. Other food products in their range are: Drinks, Fast Food and Ice creams.

Lotte is producing chewing gum in many different factories, most of them in Asia, but I’d like to focus here on the new products presented last ISM by their headquarters:

Lotte Korea presented “Tri VIEW”. This is a tab (or ministick) with three different layers (this format is very trendy now in the market). The top and bottom layers are chewing gum whilst the middle layer is chewy candy. This allows for great flavour combinations, not only in terms of taste but also in terms of impact and lasting. I attach a photo taken with my iPhone (so I apologize for the “sub-optimal” quality!)

Lotte Japan introduced two products. I discussed on a previous post about “ZEUS” (28th Aug 2012). This is also a three layer tab (or ministick) with the same concept as Tri VIEW and some others (discussed in the post I mentioned). ZEUS GUM comes in different flavors with “sexy” names: Aurora curtain, Snow storm, Thunder spark, Rain shower,…

Another product is “ENGINE”, which comes in cubic format with a slight coating and presented in a flip top box. There are different versions of the product, such as X-TRA SPEED, X-TRA WILD and X-TRA BURST and the product contains caffeine and guarana, so fall perfectly into the category of functional gum. The cubic presentation is also interesting because it is not very common in the market.
